Checks you can do

Air filter is clean and the right size
Thermostat cools the house to its setting
Outdoor unit has about 2 feet of clear space on all sides
Outdoor coil isn't packed with grass, leaves or dirt
Condensate drain line is flowing (water outside near the unit when it runs)
Drain pan under the indoor unit is dry
Insulation on the large refrigerant line is intact
No ice on the lines or coil
No new buzzing, grinding or rattling

What a professional inspection should cover

Refrigerant charge checked against the manufacturer's specs
Capacitor and contactor tested
Compressor and fan motor amp draw measured
Electrical connections tightened
Temperature drop measured between return and supply air
Indoor coil and blower checked for dirt
Outdoor coil washed
Condensate drain flushed and safety switch tested
Ductwork checked for leaks and loose connections
Thermostat calibration and operation checked
